A moms letter to Scholastic

The beginning of this week has been emotional for me and I needed to write this.

My youngest daughter Trinity, who is 6, brought home her normal 3 book orders from Scholastic. I got so excited, not just for her, but for me. I realized just how much I look forward to her bringing them home, so I can order books too.

So I snapped a photo of the orders, and posted it to Twitter with this caption, ‘One if the greatest parts of my childhood, and now a great part of being a parent.’ Then the greatest thing happened. Not only did Scholastic Canada and US favorite and retweet me, Mercer Mayer did as well! Mercer Meyer! The man who has made Little Critter a part of, not only my life but my childrens lives!

Today, my oldest daughter Summer, who is 8, brought me home her orders as well. Hers were full of checkmarks, all throughout the orders.

While I was reading through these ones, adding my own circles, it took me back to the days when I was younger, bringing home the same orders to my mom. The same amount of eagerness, and excitement my daughter felt, I felt so many times before. The fairs at the school, where you can browse the bookmarks, books, and other things for sale. For a child at that young age, It’s one of the best parts of school.

BUT – not only is Scholastic for children, it’s for the parents as well. Holding the orders in my hands, and choosing out books for all my girls and myself, I realized something. I still get that same excitement when they come home. I STILL look forward to the girls bringing home the books I ordered for all of us. My daughters bookshelf is bursting at the seams with Scholastic books. So many of the books I loved growing up, my children love just as much, if not more.

Scholastic is the main reason I am the bursting book lover I am today. Authors such as Judy Blume, Mercer Meyer, R.L Stine, Louis Sachar, Stan and Jan Berenstain, and SO MANY MORE are the reason I’m the person that I am today. They, and so many more authors are the reason my daughters love reading just as much as I do. They introduce you into real life situations, amazing worlds, scary places. They make the imagination explode with so much love for reading, amazing characters, and phenomenal writing.

Scholastic and the authors around them are ageless – Helping Children and parents learn and know just how important reading is in their everyday lives. Not only helping at home but at school as well. Donating and putting books into the libraries of not only my daughters school, but many other schools across the world. Helping teachers with the tools to make reading fun. The amount of things they do is endless.

Thank you Scholastic, not only for the memories and happiness from my childhood, but also for being a shining star in my childrens lives as well. For bringing new adventures and lessons into not only their lives but mine. For making education much more lively, and bringing out the kid in all of us.

Beautiful post! I can relate to every word. I have the fondest memories of marking up those book orders and the anticipation of receiving the books. Reading was my greatest joy as a child and I’ve carried that into my adult years. Thanks for sharing!

I feel the same way! I love Scholastic. My daughter and I just went through her flyer last night and placed an order. It’s such a wonderful memory for me. They make so many wonderful books accessible to kids of all ages (and their parents!).
