I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some kind of hero.
But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado - taking you with it - you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still a yellow brick road - but even that's crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy.
They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm - and I'm the other girl from Kansas.
I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.
I've been trained to fight.
And I have a mission.

I remember the day I saw this gorgeous book at my local Chapters/Indigo store in town – I remember picking it up, and the dust cover felt amazing in my hands. I turned it over, read the description on the back, and knew at that moment I wanted it. I pointed it out to my husband, because my birthday was coming up, and we walked out with it that day. I was so excited. I love when anyone puts a dark twist on any fairy tales. They make things more interesting and not to formal. Danielle Paige did an AMAZING job with this beauty, and March 31st, can’t come fast enough for the second book ‘The Wicked Will Rise‘.

Dorothy Must Die

“And then I thought: Bring it on. There’s no place like anywhere but here.”

Amy is a teenage girl from Kansas, who unlike the original Dorothy from the original story, does not have the perfect life. It’s a life she wants to get away from. She is a loner, an outcast at school who is so often bullied. Her mother is no saint, a drunk woman who shouldn’t be a mother in the first place. One day, Her drunk mother leaves her home alone when a Tornado is about to hit the area, leaving her with not a care in the world. The Tornado hits, and Amy is swept away  to an Oz unlike any other you’ve read about before.

She has stepped into a Land where Dorothy rules, and insists on sucking all the magic from the land for herself – So she can become the most powerful being in the land. She has an army, consisting of The Tinman, The Lion, and The Scarecrow. ( Who is my favorite, twisted character of this book. ) Glinda the Good Witch, well… She isn’t so good anymore. Her, Dorothy and the others torture, frighten, and do horrific, cruel things to the people in Oz – Amy witnessing first hand how these people are being treated. Suddenly, she comes across the Wicked Witch, and the Order of The Wicked. Amy learns they are trying to overthrow and denounce Dorothy and those who stand beside her, attempting bringing Oz back to the magical, wonderful place it use to be.

This story was so dark, and distressing and I loved every moment of it. Danielle REALLY took Oz and weaved a web of something twisted. The ending – I was not a big fan of. I found it was a cliffhanger, but it has had me watching the calendar for the release of the second book! I can’t wait, and once again, it comes out just after my birthday. ( So I know what  the hubby will be getting me for my birthday in 2015! )
