A thrilling, futuristic sci-fi novel set in a unique and thought-provoking world, from author Shannon Duffy.
Desiree Six (because she was born on a Friday) believes in everything the Protectorate stands for. She likes the safety and security of having her entire life planned out—her career, her mate, even the date of her death. She doesn't even think to question when Darian, her childhood friend and neighbor, is convicted of murdering his parents. They had seemed like such a loving family. But if he was convicted, then he must have done it.
Then Darian shows up in her room late one night. He has escaped from the Terrorscape—a nightmare machine used to punish all Noncompliants—and needs Desiree's help. What he tells her rocks her world to its core and makes her doubt everything she's ever been told. With this new information, will Desiree and Darian be able to escape the Protectorate before it's too late?

First off, I LOVE reading Canadian authors! I have mentioned this before, but finding out that Shannon is from Newfoundland Made me giddy. ( If you don’t know, I do live on the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia! ) So this excited me greatly.

I love a good dystopian, and I’ve been throughly enjoying Entangled Teen this year. Mash them all together into an amazing book, and you have ‘Awakening’. This was a book that I felt was a great fit for me, it had just the right amount of romance in it, but not enough into scaring me away from reading it.  TheProtectorate was quite interesting, and to top it all off – The Dreamscape and the Terrorscape. Both exactly just as wonderful and scary as they sound.

The two main characters, Desiree and Darian are fantastic characters, both whom I enjoyed a lot. Learning about them, and how their life is laid out for them the day they are born, left me with a few questions while reading, and after. The rules, restrictions, and guidelines to growing up and being with someone are all laid out right there. They find out who their partners will be, which is the person they will bind with for life. ( Desiree’s partner just happening to be a boy who bullied her in school. )

Darian has been put in jail, and forced into the Terrorscape every night, and for the rest of his life. Charged with murder, Desiree can’t seem to wrap her head around the fact. She doesn’t believe for a moment that he did what he is being accused of. This is where we see Desiree starting to question how the world is being governed. They have been raised to trust in The Protectorate to protect them, and know what’s best, but she’s not buying it anymore. To top is all off, she starts to fall for Darian.

Fast paced, full of all the things I love in a great book, I loved Awakening so much. After reading this, I know I will be looking to read more books from Shannon Duffy. This book kept be very enthralled, and I am so glad I got the chance to read it! I highly recommend checking it out!
