A ragtag group of teenage mercenaries who crew the spaceship Avalon stumble upon a conspiracy that could threaten the entire galaxy in this fascinating and fast-paced sci-fi adventure from author Mindee Arnett.
Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.
Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they're damn good at it. Jeth doesn't care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents' ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he'll go to get the freedom he's wanted for so long.
Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon's cult hit show Firefly.
I just finished reading ‘Avalon’ and I had to write this review right away! This is the second book from the lovely Mindee Arnett I have read, and I must say, this is my FAVORITE out of the two! The first one I had read was ‘The Nightmare Affair’. ( See my review here. ) ‘The Nightmare Affair’ had been difficult for me to get into because I found the beginning slow. ( It was still a great book ) HOWEVER – I knew Mindee had written another book in a new series, and I wanted to give it a shot. With ‘Avalon, this book has me sucked in right from the first chapter! It is so full of action and adventure. Just when I thought the action was about to die down, something else hops out at you. When you think someone is on your side, it backfires. So many twists and turns and it was SO good!
“Stealing a spaceship shouldn’t be this easy.”
Jeth Seagrave is a thief – And not just any thief. He happens to work for one of the BIGGEST crime bosses in the universe, Hammer. Jeth doesn’t want to be where he is now, but due to a bad gamble by his uncle, both him and his sister belong to Hammer. Not only do they belong to him, he also owns their uncle and the only thing they have left of their parents, Avalon. Jeth, his sister and his trusty crew are a group of thieves who do Hammers bidding for him, stealing anything he feels he needs. One day, Hammer sends the crew into the Belgrave Quadrant – The same place his parents were killed. When he and his crew arrive, a pandoras box of secrets and adventure is opened.
I REALLY enjoyed this book. I am a huge science fiction fan, and this just filled me with what I was looking for, after having read so much fantasy in the past few weeks. I am looking forward to the second book ‘Polaris‘ which is being released on January 20th! I also will be ordering ‘The Nightmare Dilemma‘ which is the second book to ‘The Nightmare Affair’, so that review will be up soon!
